John Jones

How to get from here to there without going anywhere...the John Jones story:

John is eighty-two and has lived in his own home for many years, a home that his sister and guardian bought for him after his parents died. John liked to work and was employed at Alpha Industries until last summer. He decided to quit because the results of a stroke didn’t allow him to work as hard as he thought he should. John was pretty self-sufficient and this arrangement worked well, but John’s age has caught up with him and he needed more assistance. As his needs have increased it has become harder and more expensive to serve him because his home is small, has two stories, is old and in poor repair.

Although John is willing to have a roommate, anyone moving in would have to be upstairs. Complicating the situation further was the fact that if John would need to move, his home would then become a resource and disqualify him from Medicaid and his I.O. Waiver.

Michael Corbett, Director of Delaware Creative Housing, suggested that John donate the property to Delaware Creative Housing and they could, in turn, remove the old house and build a new accessible home that will house two or three people on the property. John could have free rent for donating the property and split the living and service costs with his new roommates. This was presented to John and his team and they liked the idea. A prospective roommate was introduced to John and they hit it off immediately.

Delaware Creative Housing owns the house next door to John’s home and one of the apartments was being vacated so John was able to move into temporary housing across the driveway with his new roommate and watch his new house being built without having to leave the neighborhood. The new home should be completed in 2004.

That’s how you get from here to there without going anywhere.
